Austin is a typical American city whose motto, since the Texas War of Independence, is “how and take it”. As I say, think from you about what concerns you, and this makes me even more sympathetic. We live in a villa with swimming pool in the North Hills neighborhood. It seems to me to be one of the protagonists of Desperate Housewife: the driveway with the houses of neighbors, different but similar, the typically American cars left out of the garages, the people who greet you with formal American friendliness. In short, they are where I would have liked to be. We made the house exchange with Mark and Sheila and their two girls. However, they left us with the task of caring for Luna, their cat. But my two sons, Francis and Eleonora, are enthusiastic about this.
On the first day, as soon as we wake up, Eleonora and I, we leave home and meet one of our neighbors, Susi, who teaches anthropology at the University and speaks a very understandable American (not always it is easy to understand the Texans, they train many words). Bring breakfast home as a welcome sign! I almost cry from emotion by comparing his kindness to that of my compatriots. Just to give an example, when Mark and Sheila came to Florence, an elderly couple in my small condominium was angry with me for having given my apartment to “foreigners”!
Here they are all nice, it is a quiet neighborhood and neighbors know that Italians live in the villa of Frein. So they are particularly friendly with us. Despite the fact that I hate fatigue, I decide to take a run in the surroundings. Will little resistance (as always), will it be due to high humidity?
The real wonder, however, are the families of deer with their deer who come, early in the morning, in front of the house to graze the lawn. They do not seem to have much fear of humans, for we can almost touch them. Every morning I leave home to meet them.
Comfortable note: Austin requires a car with navigator. Otherwise you can’t get anywhere, the roads look a bit like all the Texans are aggressive and decisive even when they drive!
